Templum Drawings

These are from a series of about fifty drawings done in the late 1970's, all based on a six-inch square. The earliest derived from a planned performance piece, in which I would weave in and out of an invisible square, with sound and light switching on and off as I crossed the boundary. I used water-soluble ink on handmade paper, and some passages got almost washed out. This interpl;ay between control and submission to Somehting Else is akin to certain forms of divination (such as scapulomancy) The image of a templum or 'temenos', within which events are given a special significance, is at the root of words like 'contemplate'.
